About Vienna University of Economics and Business

The Vienna University of Economics and Business (Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, WU) is Austria's public university for business, economics, and business law. It was founded in 1898 as the Imperial Export Academy to train merchants for foreign trade, became the University of World Trade in 1919, and took its present name in 1975. Since 2013 it has occupied Campus WU in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district, a purpose-built site beside the Prater whose library and learning center was designed by Zaha Hadid.

WU is organized around departments in business administration, economics, finance, information systems, and business law rather than a full set of general faculties. Graduate students work in quantitative economics, finance, management, socioeconomics, and information systems, and through the WU Executive Academy for MBA and executive degrees. The university belongs to the CEMS alliance and maintains research institutes in international economics, regulatory affairs, and family business.

The university enrolls about 22,000 students, a large share of them in master's and doctoral programs. More than a quarter of students come from outside Austria, from more than 100 countries. Academic staff include several hundred professors and many lecturers. Alumni include Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, former Nestle chief executive Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, and executives in Austrian and European banking.

Graduate study is concentrated in consecutive master's degrees taught in English or German, doctoral programs in economics and social sciences, and professional MBAs. Supervision follows the European model of departmental chairs and research institutes, with structured doctoral colleges in several fields. The academic year runs on winter and summer semesters. Students live in Vienna, using public transport from Leopoldstadt to internships in banking, consulting, and public administration.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Vienna University of Economics and Business lists 1 master's program, in law.
