Deakin University

Deakin University is a public university in Victoria, Australia, established in 1974 and named for Alfred Deakin, the country's second prime minister. It opened in Geelong and grew into a multi-campus institution with sites at Waurn Ponds and the Geelong Waterfront, Burwood in Melbourne, and Warrnambool, together with a large online Cloud Campus. Regional, metropolitan, and distance teaching together define its structure.

The university is organized into faculties of health; business and law; science, engineering and the built environment; and arts and education. Graduate work is associated with nutrition and exercise science, education, business, nursing, and materials and manufacturing engineering. Research units that matter for graduate students include the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition, the Institute for Frontier Materials, and the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation.

Deakin enrolls about 60,000 students, including a large online cohort, with a substantial graduate minority and more than 15,000 international students from more than 100 countries. Academic staff number in the thousands across the Victorian campuses and the Cloud Campus. Alumni are concentrated in Australian public administration, the health professions, and school and higher education.

Graduate study runs on a trimester calendar and includes coursework master's degrees and supervised research master's and doctoral degrees. University awards and Australian government research training stipends are the usual funding routes. Students in Geelong divide time between the waterfront campus in the city and laboratories at Waurn Ponds; others work at Burwood in Melbourne or fully online.
