About Institute of Science and Technology Austria

The Institute of Science and Technology Austria is a public research institute in Klosterneuburg, Austria, just north of Vienna. It was established by federal law in 2006 and enrolled its first doctoral class in 2009. Its structure is a graduate science institute of independent research groups, not a multi-faculty civic university.

Groups work in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, neuroscience, computer science, and related data science, occupying a single purpose-built campus rather than scattered city faculties. The graduate school runs the Ph.D. English is the language of instruction and administration. There is no teaching hospital.

Several hundred doctoral students and postdocs work with about 80 faculty group leaders. Students come from several dozen countries and form a large majority-international community. Alumni enter academic science and research-intensive industry.

The degree is a funded Ph.D. with rotations then a dissertation; a taught master's is not the main offering. Students are institute employees. The academic year is continuous laboratory work rather than a dense lecture calendar. Daily life is the Klosterneuburg campus, with Vienna a short train ride away.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Institute of Science and Technology Austria lists 2 graduate programs in biology and physics, all of them doctoral programs.
