About University of Adelaide
The University of Adelaide is a public research university in Adelaide, South Australia, founded in 1874 as the colony's university and the third oldest in Australia. It expanded from the North Terrace city campus to the Waite agricultural campus and the Roseworthy campus north of the city. It is a comprehensive university with professional faculties in medicine, law, engineering and agriculture.
Faculties cover arts, sciences, health and medical sciences, the professions including business and law, and engineering, computer and mathematical sciences. Graduate work is identified with biomedical science, agriculture and wine science at Waite, geosciences and engineering. The North Terrace precinct includes the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute; Waite houses plant and agricultural institutes.
Enrollment is about 27,000 to 30,000 students, with a high international share, especially from Asia, and several thousand in graduate study. Howard Florey and J. Robin Warren, later Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine, studied at Adelaide. Alumni also include Australian political leaders and scientists in medicine and agriculture.
Graduate study follows the Australian pattern of coursework master's, research master's and PhDs under a principal supervisor. The academic year typically runs from late February to November in two semesters. Research students may hold Research Training Program stipends; international master's students compete for university scholarships. Most graduate life is on the city campus beside Adelaide's park lands, with agricultural research at Waite.
