Graduate research is tied to the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, and agricultural and environmental field stations. Antarctic and Southern Ocean science, maritime studies, and island health are the fields most associated with the university.
It enrolls on the order of 30,000 students, including a large distance-education group and international students from more than 100 countries. Graduate students are a minority of the total. Staff number more than a thousand. Alumni include Mary Donaldson, now Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.
Graduate degrees include coursework master’s, research master’s, and Ph.D. programs, with marine and medical students often based at IMAS on the Hobart waterfront or at Menzies.
