About University of Technology Sydney

The University of Technology Sydney is a public university in Ultimo, on the western edge of Sydney's central business district. It became a university in 1988, succeeding the New South Wales Institute of Technology and, behind that, Sydney Technical College, which dates to the 1870s. It remains a technological university in orientation, focused on applied professional fields rather than a collegiate arts model.

Faculties and schools include Business; Design, Architecture and Building; Engineering and Information Technology; Health; Law; Science; Arts and Social Sciences; and the transdisciplinary TD School. UTS is known for engineering and IT, design, nursing and health, and business. Graduate researchers work with the Institute for Sustainable Futures, faculty research centers in data and health, and studios in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building.

Enrollment is about 45,000 students, with a large coursework-master's population and more than a third of students coming from outside Australia, from over 120 countries. Academic staff number about 2,000. Alumni include actor Hugh Jackman and politician Tanya Plibersek.

Graduate study is dominated by coursework master's degrees, especially professional master's in business, IT, engineering, design, and health, with research master's and PhD programs based on a thesis and a supervisory panel. The academic year runs in two main sessions. Scholarships include Australian Government Research Training Program awards and UTS International scholarships. The Ultimo campus sits beside Darling Harbour and Central Station, so graduate students work in a dense inner-city setting rather than a park campus.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Technology Sydney lists 10 graduate programs across 7 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in finance & financial economics, urban planning and accounting. University of Technology Sydney holds rank 142 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
