About Western Sydney University

Western Sydney University is a public university serving the western suburbs of Sydney, Australia. It was established in 1989 as the University of Western Sydney by federating teaching colleges at Hawkesbury, Nepean, and Macarthur, and it adopted the Western Sydney University name in 2015. Its defining structure is a multi-campus network, including Parramatta, Penrith, Bankstown, Campbelltown, Hawkesbury, and Liverpool, rather than a single central precinct.

Schools cover business, engineering and the built environment, health sciences, nursing, education, humanities and communication arts, law, medicine, psychology, science, and social sciences. It is known for urban and community health, education, environmental science, and the Hawkesbury agricultural tradition. Graduate researchers use the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development, and the National Institute of Complementary Medicine.

Enrollment is about 50,000 students, with a high share of first-in-family and culturally diverse students from Greater Western Sydney and a large international cohort from South and East Asia and the Middle East. Graduate students are a smaller fraction than at older Australian research universities but are growing. Alumni include writer and artist Anh Do and many teachers, nurses, and public servants in New South Wales.

Graduate study is mainly coursework master's degrees and research master's and PhDs under Australian Research Training Program rules, on a calendar that starts in March, with a mid-year intake. Scholarships include RTP stipends and university awards; many master's students study while working in Sydney. Daily life is suburban and multi-site: trains between Parramatta and Penrith, river-flat teaching at Hawkesbury, and high-rise buildings at Parramatta.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Western Sydney University lists 2 graduate programs in education and languages & linguistics: 1 master's program and 1 doctoral program. Western Sydney University holds rank 329 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
