About University of Antwerp
The University of Antwerp is a Dutch-language public university in Antwerp, Belgium. It was formed in 2003 by the merger of three institutions whose roots include a Jesuit college of 1852 and later state university colleges. The merged university kept a multi-campus map: City campus in the historic center, Middelheim and Groenenborger in the south, and Campus Drie Eiken in Wilrijk for sciences and medicine.
Nine faculties cover arts, law, social sciences, business and economics, design sciences, applied engineering, medicine and health sciences, pharmaceutical, biomedical and veterinary sciences, and science. Graduate strengths include chemistry, economics, law, development studies, and biomedical research. The Institute of Development Policy and hospital partnerships through Antwerp University Hospital are the main extra-faculty nodes for research students.
Enrollment is about 20,000 students, with international students around one-fifth of the total and a higher share in master's and doctoral programs, drawn from many countries. Academic staff number in the thousands. Alumni include Flemish political and business figures and researchers in chemistry and tropical and biomedical science.
Graduate degrees follow the Bologna bachelor, master, and doctorate sequence, with many master's taught in English. Doctoral work is organized through faculty doctoral schools with a supervisor and doctoral committee. The academic year runs from September to July. Funding includes FWO fellowships, university assistantships, and European project contracts. Campuses sit inside Antwerp, a port city with direct trains to Brussels and the Netherlands.
