About Carleton University
Carleton University is a public university in Ottawa, Ontario, founded in 1942 as Carleton College for wartime students and chartered as a university in 1957. Its campus sits at the confluence of the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal, across the canal from the federal core. Carleton developed as a civic university with strength in public affairs, journalism, international affairs, and engineering rather than as a medical or agricultural college.
Faculties include Public Affairs, Engineering and Design, Science, Arts and Social Sciences, and the Sprott School of Business. The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and the School of Journalism and Communication are the named units most tied to graduate study. Research centers cover European, African, and security studies as well as engineering linked to Ottawa's federal and telecom employers.
The university enrolls about 30,000 students, including several thousand graduate students. International students make up a substantial share, drawn from many countries. Faculty number more than a thousand. Alumni include journalist Nahlah Ayed and Vice co-founder Shane Smith, along with a large group of Canadian public servants and diplomats.
Graduate study is offered through MA, MSc, MEng, MBA, and PhD degrees, with professional master's common in public policy and international affairs. Programs combine coursework with a thesis or research essay; doctorates use the Canadian supervisory-committee model. The year follows a fall–winter semester calendar with a spring and summer term. Ottawa's ministries, NGOs, and tech firms shape internships and part-time work for students living on or near the Rideau campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Carleton University lists 18 graduate programs across 13 subjects: 14 master's programs and 3 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in biology, business & management and computer science.
