About Laurentian University
Laurentian University is a public university in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. It was founded in 1960 to serve Northeastern Ontario. It is bilingual in English and French and has a tricultural mandate that includes Indigenous communities of the region. Federated institutions on campus have included Huntington University and Thorneloe University. It is a regional comprehensive university, not a collegiate or specialist institute.
Faculties include arts, science, engineering, health, education, and management. The university is known for geology, mining, and related earth sciences through units such as the Harquail School of Earth Sciences and the Goodman School of Mines, and for forensic science, midwifery, and occupational health. Research in occupational safety and mining reflects the Sudbury Basin's nickel and copper industry.
Enrollment has been several thousand students, on the order of 6,000 to 9,000 in recent years, with a smaller graduate share. The bilingual and Indigenous student communities are part of the campus mix. Faculty numbers are in the hundreds. Alumni work in Canadian mining, health care, education, and public service in the North.
Taught master's degrees are the usual graduate path, with research master's and some doctoral work in sciences and related fields. Supervision is department-based. The calendar is two semesters. Graduate students live in a mid-sized mining city on Ramsey Lake, with a large lakeside campus and a regional rather than metropolitan setting.
