About Montreal Institute of Learning Algorithms

The Montreal Institute of Learning Algorithms, now Mila, the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, is a research institute in Montreal. It grew from Yoshua Bengio's laboratory at Université de Montréal, started in 1993, and became a multi-university institute. Students and faculty hold appointments at partner universities rather than taking degrees from Mila itself.

Research focuses on machine learning, deep learning, and related theory and applications. Partners include Université de Montréal, McGill University, Polytechnique Montréal, and HEC Montréal. The main site is in Mile-Ex.

More than 1,000 researchers work at Mila, including faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. Yoshua Bengio is the scientist most closely identified with the institute.

Graduate students pursue master's and doctoral degrees at the partner universities while conducting research in Mila groups. Supervision is laboratory-based. The institute sits in a dense Montreal AI district, and daily work proceeds in English and French.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Montreal Institute of Learning Algorithms lists 3 graduate programs in artificial intelligence: 2 master's programs and 1 doctoral program.
