About OCAD University

OCAD University is a public art and design university in downtown Toronto, Ontario. It was founded in 1876 as the Ontario School of Art, later operated as the Ontario College of Art, gained university status in 2002, and took the OCAD University name in 2010. It is a specialist art and design institution. The campus around McCaul Street and Grange Park includes the Sharp Centre for Design, a studio building raised on colored stilts and completed in 2004 to a design by Will Alsop.

Teaching is organized through the Faculty of Art, the Faculty of Design, and the Faculty of Arts and Science. Graduate work concentrates on studio art, design, digital futures, inclusive design, strategic foresight, and criticism and curatorial practice. Studios, workshops, and campus galleries are the main workplaces for graduate students.

About 4,500 to 5,000 students enroll, most of them undergraduates, with a few hundred in graduate programs and a sizable international share. Faculty are practicing artists, designers, and scholars. Alumni are concentrated in Canadian art, design, film, and publishing.

Graduate study is at master's level, including MFA and MDes routes, with studio or project supervision. The calendar is a semester year. Students live in central Toronto and work on a compact downtown campus beside the Art Gallery of Ontario.
