About Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics
Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is an independent research institute in Waterloo, Ontario, founded in 1999 by BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis as a specialist center for theoretical physics rather than a full university. Its building beside Silver Lake houses work in quantum theory, gravity, cosmology, particle physics, and mathematical physics.
Graduate teaching centers on the Perimeter Scholars International master's program with the University of Waterloo. Doctoral students enroll at Waterloo or other universities while based at the institute. Research groups and visitor programs structure daily work.
About 150 researchers are in residence, with students and visitors from many countries. Faculty are theoretical physicists recruited internationally.
The one-year PSI master's is coursework-heavy then research-oriented; doctorates are taken through partner universities. Students work in one research building. Waterloo is a university city west of Toronto, adjacent to the University of Waterloo.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics lists 3 graduate programs in physics, all of them master's programs.
