About Trent University
Trent University is a public university in Peterborough, Ontario, opened in 1964 and planned from the start as a small collegiate university on the Otonabee River. That college system remains its defining structure, with undergraduate colleges including Champlain, Lady Eaton, Catharine Parr Traill, Otonabee, and Peter Gzowski. A second campus in Durham Region at Oshawa extends teaching into the Greater Toronto Area. The original site occupies river shoreline north of downtown Peterborough.
Teaching is grouped through arts, science, and professional programs rather than a large set of separate professional schools. Graduate activity is strongest in environmental and aquatic science, Indigenous studies, Canadian studies, anthropology, and watershed ecology. Units such as the Institute for Watershed Science and the Trent School of the Environment, together with field ties to provincial conservation authorities, matter for research students.
Enrollment is about 11,000 students, most of them undergraduates, with graduate numbers in the low thousands. International students are a visible minority of the total and come from many countries. Faculty number a few hundred. Alumni include writer and consultant Don Tapscott and novelist Linwood Barclay, along with graduates in Ontario public life and journalism.
Graduate degrees are mainly research master's and PhDs in arts and science fields, with some professional master's in education, management, and sustainability. Supervision is tutorial and laboratory based. The academic year follows the Canadian fall and winter pattern with a spring and summer term. Funding comes through federal tri-council awards, Ontario Graduate Scholarships, and teaching assistantships. Graduate life is centered on the river campus, about 90 minutes northeast of Toronto.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Trent University lists 2 graduate programs in data science & business analytics, all of them master's programs.
