About University of New Brunswick
The University of New Brunswick is a public university whose Fredericton campus is the oldest English-language university in Canada, tracing to an academy of 1785 and a royal charter in 1827. A second campus opened in Saint John in 1964. Engineering, forestry, computer science, and law are concentrated in Fredericton on a hill above the Saint John River, while Saint John carries arts, science, business, and health programs.
Faculties include arts, science, engineering, computer science, forestry and environmental management, nursing, law, business, education, and kinesiology. The Canadian Rivers Institute, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, and the Wood Science and Technology Centre support graduate research. Computer science and engineering have long ties to the province's information technology and energy employers.
Enrollment is about 8,000 to 10,000 students across both campuses, with graduate students a smaller share. International students are a substantial minority, particularly in engineering and computer science, and come from many countries. Alumni include former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna and poets Bliss Carman and Charles G.D. Roberts.
Graduate awards include research master's, PhDs, professional master's in engineering and education, and a law degree on the Fredericton campus. Supervision is laboratory and field based in the science and forestry units. The academic year follows the Canadian fall and winter pattern. Funding includes federal council scholarships, provincial innovation awards, and teaching assistantships. Fredericton is a small provincial capital; Saint John is a port city. Campus housing and compact downtowns shape graduate life through long winters.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of New Brunswick lists 2 graduate programs in mechanical engineering and operations research & management science, all of them master's programs.
