About York University

York University is a public research university in Toronto, founded in 1959. Its main Keele campus occupies a large site in North York; Glendon College, a bilingual liberal-arts campus, sits in midtown Toronto. It is one of Canada's largest universities by enrollment and is organized as a multi-faculty institution rather than a collegiate one.

Faculties include Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, Science, the Lassonde School of Engineering, Health, Environmental and Urban Change, Education, and the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, together with the Schulich School of Business and Osgoode Hall Law School. The Centre for Research in Earth and Space Science and Osgoode's research institutes are central for those fields.

About 55,000 students are enrolled, including a large graduate population. International students form a substantial share, from East and South Asia, the Middle East, and elsewhere. Faculty number several thousand. Alumni include actor Rachel McAdams, Canadian astronaut Steve MacLean, and many graduates of Osgoode and Schulich who work in law, government, and business in Toronto.

Graduate degrees include research master's, professional master's, the J.D., the M.B.A., and doctorates, with thesis supervision in the research streams and studio or clinic work in law, business, and the arts. The calendar is two semesters, with some professional programs on a different cycle. Keele is a large suburban campus; Glendon and downtown professional sites put part of graduate life in the city.
