About University of St.Gallen

The University of St.Gallen (HSG) is a public university in St. Gallen, in German-speaking eastern Switzerland. Founded in 1898 as a business academy, it remains a specialist university in management, economics, law, international affairs, and computer science rather than a comprehensive university. Teaching and research sit on the Rosenberg campus above the city.

Schools and departments cover business administration, economics, law, international affairs, and computer science. The university is known for strategy, finance, banking, and international management. The Institute of Banking and Finance, the Institute of Management, and related research institutes on the Rosenberg campus are the centers master's and doctoral students use. English-taught master's programs, including the Master in Strategy and International Management, sit at the center of the graduate offering.

About 9,000 students enroll, with a high international share at master's level, often more than 30 percent, from dozens of countries. Academic staff is relatively small for a European university and is concentrated in management and economics. Alumni include banker Josef Ackermann and a large cohort of Swiss and European corporate executives.

Graduate degrees are specialized master's (M.A. HSG) and doctorates in economics, management, and law. Master's study is structured and cohort-based; doctoral work mixes seminars with a dissertation. The calendar follows Swiss autumn and spring semesters. Assistant posts and scholarships fund many doctoral students; master's students are often self-funded or employer-supported. The campus is compact, and students live in St. Gallen or commute on regional rail.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of St.Gallen lists 4 graduate programs across 4 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in business & management, finance & financial economics and financial engineering & quantitative finance.
