About Tsinghua University
Tsinghua University is a public research university in Haidian District, Beijing, built on the grounds of former Qing imperial gardens. It opened in 1911 as Tsinghua Imperial College, a preparatory school for students going to the United States, funded by returned Boxer Indemnity payments. It became a full university in 1928. From 1937 to 1946 it joined Peking and Nankai universities to form National Southwestern Associated University in Kunming. The 1952 national reorganization turned it into a polytechnic institute, and since the late 1970s it has rebuilt its sciences, humanities, social sciences, economics and medicine.
Tsinghua has about 20 schools and more than 50 departments. It is best known for engineering, computer science, architecture, and economics and management. Its units include the School of Economics and Management and the School of Public Policy and Management. The Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences, led by Turing Award winner Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, is also part of Tsinghua. Schwarzman College was founded in 2016. Graduate research also takes place at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School and the Global Innovation Exchange, run with the University of Washington near Seattle.
Tsinghua enrolls more than 50,000 students, and about two thirds are graduate students. Several thousand international students come from more than 100 countries. Its alumni include Nobel physics laureate Chen Ning Yang, who later led its Institute for Advanced Study, and Chinese Presidents Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping.
Most master's and doctoral students join a faculty adviser's research group, and doctoral study there centers on research. English-taught options include the one-year Schwarzman Scholars master's in global affairs, an international MBA and an international MPA. International students often hold Chinese Government, Beijing Government or university scholarships. The year runs in fall and spring semesters, starting in September. The campus is large and students get around by bicycle. It sits next to the Wudaokou student district and the Zhongguancun technology hub.
