About Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg

Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg is a public research university in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, founded in 1457 by Archduke Albert VI of Austria. It grew from a late-medieval studium with the four traditional faculties into a full-range German university and remains a single-city campus institution rather than a multi-site merger.

Eleven faculties cover theology, law, economics and behavioral sciences, medicine, philology, philosophy, mathematics and physics, chemistry and pharmacy, biology, environment and natural resources, and engineering. Graduate students work with the University Medical Center Freiburg, the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, and institutes in microsystems, renewable energy, and forest sciences.

About 24,000 students enroll, with international students around 16 percent from more than 100 countries and a substantial graduate share. The university has been associated with Nobel laureates including Hans Spemann and chemists Hermann Staudinger and Georg Wittig. Philosopher Edmund Husserl taught here; Hannah Arendt studied in Freiburg.

Doctoral work follows the German individual-supervision model inside faculties, alongside structured graduate schools. Master's degrees are consecutive or research-oriented under the Bologna calendar of winter and summer semesters. Funding often comes from Land and DFG posts and foundations. The compact city sits at the edge of the Black Forest, and much graduate life is within walking distance of the historic center.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg lists 1 doctoral program, in biology. Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg holds rank 231 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
