About Berlin Mathematical School
The Berlin Mathematical School is a joint graduate school of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin, established in 2006 with support from Germany's Excellence Initiative. It is a structured doctoral program in mathematics rather than a separate university, and it coordinates graduate training across the three Berlin mathematics departments.
Research and teaching cover pure and applied mathematics, including algebra, geometry, analysis, probability, discrete mathematics and mathematical physics. Doctoral students join research groups at the three universities and at affiliated institutes such as the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics and the Zuse Institute Berlin.
The school typically enrolls on the order of 150 to 200 doctoral students, a large share of them from outside Germany. Many hold prior degrees from universities in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Supervision is provided by faculty of the three universities. There is no undergraduate population attached to the school itself.
The degree is a PhD, with a Phase I of coursework and qualifying requirements and a Phase II dissertation under a supervisor. English is the working language. Support commonly takes the form of BMS scholarships, research-grant posts and university positions. Students are based at campuses in Dahlem, Mitte and Charlottenburg and live in Berlin.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Berlin Mathematical School lists 1 doctoral program, in mathematics.
