About Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen
Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen is a public research university in Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg, founded in 1477 by Count Eberhard im Bart. It is one of the older German full universities, a faculty university in a small Neckar town rather than a technical institute or a collegiate system. Growth added a large medical faculty and science campus while historic buildings remain in the old town.
Seven faculties cover Protestant and Catholic theology, law, medicine, humanities, economics and social sciences, and science. Graduate students in medicine use University Hospital Tübingen and the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research. Natural-science and machine-learning work connects to nearby Max Planck institutes and to the Cyber Valley network with Stuttgart. Theology and philosophy remain historically central.
About 27,000 students are enrolled, including several thousand in master's and doctoral study and an international minority from many countries. The professoriate numbers about 500, plus scientific staff. Johannes Kepler studied here; G. W. F. Hegel trained at the Tübinger Stift attached to the university; and Nobel laureate Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard worked at the local Max Planck Institute.
Graduate degrees follow the German pattern of consecutive master's and doctoral dissertations under a faculty supervisor, with structured graduate schools in some sciences. The calendar is two semesters, winter and summer. Doctoral funding often comes from state and federal stipends, research posts, and graduate schools. Daily life is a compact university town: hill streets, the Neckar, and clinics and labs on the Schnarrenberg and Morgenstelle campuses.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen lists 2 graduate programs in biology: 1 master's program and 1 doctoral program. Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen holds rank 205 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
