Freie Universität Berlin

Freie Universitaet Berlin is a public research university in Berlin, Germany. It was founded in 1948 in the American sector of West Berlin after Humboldt University came under Soviet-sector control, with support from American foundations. Its main campus is in Dahlem in the southwest of the city. It is a comprehensive university with a departmental structure rather than a collegiate system.

Twelve academic departments cover the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and veterinary medicine. Area-studies centers that matter to graduate students include the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies, the Institute for Latin American Studies, and East Asian studies. Medicine is taught through Charite - Universitaetsmedizin Berlin, the joint medical faculty with Humboldt-Universitaet. Natural-science laboratories are concentrated in Dahlem.

Enrollment is about 33,000 students, with international students around 15 to 20 percent and more than 100 countries represented. Graduate students form a large minority. The faculty numbers in the thousands. Chemist Gerhard Ertl, a Nobel laureate, worked in Dahlem at the Fritz Haber Institute in association with the university.

Graduate degrees follow the Bologna pattern of master's and doctoral study, with structured graduate schools alongside traditional supervisor-led doctorates. Many master's programs last two years; doctoral work may be individual or within a Graduiertenkolleg. The calendar is winter and summer semesters. Students work on the Dahlem campus and in a capital city with archives, museums, and research institutes.
