About Heidelberg University
Heidelberg University (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität) is a public research university in Heidelberg, in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Founded in 1386 by Elector Ruprecht I, it is Germany's oldest university. It is a comprehensive faculty university, not a technical institute, with early strengths in law, theology, and medicine and a compact old-town setting on the Neckar River.
Twelve faculties cover theology, law, philosophy, modern languages, economics and social sciences, behavioural and cultural studies, mathematics and computer science, physics and astronomy, chemistry and earth sciences, biosciences, engineering sciences, and medicine, including Heidelberg University Hospital. Graduate students also work with the German Cancer Research Center, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, and Max Planck institutes in the city. Medicine, physics, and the life sciences are central strengths.
The university enrolls about 30,000 students, including a large master's and doctoral population. International students are about a fifth of enrollment and come from well over 100 countries. Faculty number several thousand when hospital clinicians are included. Dozens of Nobel laureates have been affiliated with Heidelberg. Figures associated with the university include sociologist Max Weber, chemist Robert Bunsen, and former German chancellor Helmut Kohl.
Graduate study follows consecutive master's degrees and supervised doctorates (Dr. phil., Dr. rer. nat., Dr. med.), with structured graduate schools alongside traditional supervisor-led work. The calendar is winter and summer semesters. Doctoral funding often comes from state posts, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft grants, or institute contracts. Humanities concentrate in the old town; laboratory sciences sit on the Neuenheimer Feld campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Heidelberg University lists 7 graduate programs across 5 subjects: 5 master's programs and 2 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in biology, health & medical sciences and physics.
