About Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf
Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf is a public research university in Düsseldorf, Germany, founded in 1965 from a medical academy and named in 1988 for the poet Heinrich Heine. It is a campus university in the south of the city, with a full faculty structure rather than a technical-institute profile.
Five faculties cover medicine, arts and humanities, mathematics and natural sciences, law, and business administration and economics. Medicine and University Hospital Düsseldorf dominate clinical training. Other graduate strengths include economics, law, and the life sciences, with research support on the medical campus and regional Max Planck and Leibniz links.
About 35,000 students enroll, including a large medical and postgraduate population. International students make up about one sixth of enrollment and come from many countries. The medical faculty is among the larger units. Alumni include physicians, jurists, and figures in German public life.
Graduate awards include the Staatsexamen in medicine and law, consecutive master's degrees, and doctorates such as Dr. med. and Dr. rer. nat. Supervision follows the German chair model. The calendar is winter and summer semesters. Students live on or near the southern campus, with central Düsseldorf a short tram ride along the Rhine.
