About Helmholtz Center for Information Security

The Helmholtz Center for Information Security (CISPA) is a national cybersecurity research center in Saarbrücken, Germany. It opened in 2011 as a university-linked institute and became a Helmholtz Association center in 2019. It is a specialist research institute, not a comprehensive university.

Research groups work on cryptography, software and systems security, privacy, machine-learning security, and formal methods. Doctoral researchers use CISPA laboratories and the adjacent Saarland University and Max Planck Institute for Informatics on the Saarbrücken computer-science campus.

The center has grown to several hundred researchers and doctoral candidates, with a high international share. It does not teach a large undergraduate body. Alumni are mainly in academic security groups and the technology industry.

Graduate study is a research doctorate, usually with a Saarland University degree and CISPA employment contracts. The pattern is full-time laboratory work and seminars rather than a large taught master's. Saarbrücken is a small border city; students share a compact campus and can travel easily to France and Luxembourg.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Helmholtz Center for Information Security lists 1 doctoral program, in computer science.
