Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is a public university in Berlin, opened in 1810 on the research-and-teaching model associated with Wilhelm von Humboldt. It occupied the Unter den Linden palace as the University of Berlin, was later named Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, and took its present name in 1949. After 1945 it was the main university of East Berlin; since German reunification it has remained a comprehensive university in Mitte, with natural-science facilities at Adlershof.

Faculties cover law, culture and social sciences, humanities, mathematics and natural sciences, life sciences, theology, and economics. Medicine is taught through Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, operated jointly with Freie Universität Berlin. Graduate research is tied to centers in the Berlin University Alliance and to institutes on Campus Adlershof, including physics, chemistry, and computer science laboratories.

About 35,000 students are enrolled, with more than 5,000 international students from well over 100 countries and a large master's and doctoral share. More than two dozen Nobel laureates have been affiliated as students or faculty, among them Albert Einstein and Max Planck. Former students include Karl Marx and Heinrich Heine.

Graduate study follows the German bachelor-master-doctorate sequence. Doctoral work is often individual under a supervisor, with structured programs available through Humboldt Graduate School. The academic year is divided into winter and summer semesters. Public funding and German and European doctoral scholarships are the usual support. Students work in central Berlin, with additional laboratories at Adlershof in the city's southeast.
