About Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is a public research university in Karlsruhe, Germany, formed in 2009 by merging Universität Karlsruhe (TH), a technical university that traces to the Polytechnic School of 1825, with the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe national laboratory founded in 1956. KIT is both a university and a Helmholtz Association research center. Campus South is the urban university site; Campus North is the former research center north of the city.

Eleven faculties cover engineering, natural sciences, economics, and the humanities, with particular depth in mechanical and electrical engineering, informatics, physics, chemistry, and energy research. Graduate students use Helmholtz large-scale facilities and KIT research centers. Computer science and engineering remain the fields most associated with the older technical university.

Enrollment is about 23,000 students, with more than 20 percent international and a large master's and doctoral share typical of a German technical university. Faculty and scientific staff together number several thousand when the Helmholtz branch is included. Heinrich Hertz worked at the earlier technical university; later alumni are concentrated in German engineering, energy, and information-technology industries.

Graduate education follows bachelor-master-doctorate cycles, with research master's and Dr.-Ing. or Dr. rer. nat. doctorates under chair supervision, plus structured graduate schools. The German semester calendar applies. Many doctoral researchers are paid as scientific staff. Karlsruhe is a midsize city in Baden-Württemberg with rail links to Stuttgart and Frankfurt.
