About Max Planck Institute For Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute)

The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, also known as the Albert Einstein Institute, is a Max Planck Society institute founded in 1995. Its main site is in Potsdam-Golm, with a second campus in Hannover linked to Leibniz University Hannover. It is a specialist institute for general relativity and gravitational-wave science, not a multi-faculty university.

Departments cover astrophysical relativity, quantum gravity, observational relativity, and laser interferometry, including work with GEO600, LIGO, and LISA-related projects. Students use Potsdam theory groups and Hannover interferometer labs.

A few hundred staff and students work across the two sites, many of them international. Partner universities, including Potsdam and Leibniz University Hannover, confer the degrees.

Ph.D. training runs through IMPRS programs in gravitational-wave astronomy and in gravity, cosmology, and quantum field theory, on funded contracts. Daily life is split between the Golm science park outside Berlin and the Hannover gravitational-wave campus.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Max Planck Institute For Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) lists 1 doctoral program, in physics.
