About Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg
Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg is a public university in Magdeburg, capital of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was formed in 1993 by merging the Technical University Magdeburg (1953), the Medical Academy, and a teacher-training college, and is named for Otto von Guericke, the seventeenth-century physicist and mayor of Magdeburg. It is a post-reunification campus with an engineering and medical core.
Nine faculties cover computer science, economics and management, human sciences, mechanical engineering, process and systems engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, and medicine. Strengths include mechanical and process engineering, neuroscience, and medical technology. Graduate students use the university hospital and nearby institutes such as the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems.
Enrollment is about 13,000 to 14,000 students, with many in master's and doctoral work. International students are often more than 20 percent, from a wide set of countries. Several hundred professors work with larger hospital and institute staffs. Alumni are concentrated in German engineering, hospitals, and public administration in Saxony-Anhalt.
Graduate study follows the German bachelor's, master's, and doctorate sequence, with English-taught master's programs in engineering and economics and German-language medical training. Doctoral work is typically supervision by a professor, sometimes inside a research training group. The year is split into winter and summer semesters. Funding comes from university posts and research grants. Students live in a compact Elbe city where labs, the hospital, and housing are close together.
