About RWTH Aachen University

RWTH Aachen University is a public technical university in Aachen, Germany, near the Belgian and Dutch borders. It was founded in 1870 as the Royal Rhine-Westphalian Polytechnic School and grew into Germany's largest university of technology. It is a Technische Hochschule in the German sense: engineering and the natural sciences sit at the core, with medicine added later.

Nine faculties cover mathematics, computer science and natural sciences; architecture; civil engineering; mechanical engineering; georesources and materials; electrical engineering and information technology; arts and humanities; business and economics; and medicine, linked to University Hospital RWTH Aachen. Graduate work is strongest in mechanical and electrical engineering, materials, computer science, and the physical sciences. Students use the RWTH Aachen Campus industry clusters, laboratories of the Jülich-Aachen research alliance, and the hospital.

About 47,000 students enroll, including more than 10,000 from outside Germany. Academic staff number several thousand. Physicist Peter Debye taught at the Technische Hochschule, and alumni are concentrated in German engineering and manufacturing.

Graduate study follows Bologna master's degrees and the German doctorate, including Dr.-Ing. in engineering, with research groups under a professor. The year splits into winter and summer semesters. Public funds and industry contracts support many doctoral researchers. Aachen is a compact city; labs and housing sit near the center and the Dutch border.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, RWTH Aachen University lists 3 graduate programs across 3 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in data science & business analytics, electrical engineering and physics. RWTH Aachen University holds rank 113 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
