About University of Stuttgart

The University of Stuttgart was founded in 1829 as a trade and technical school and later became a full technical university. It occupies two sites in Stuttgart, Germany: Stadtmitte in the city center and a larger science campus at Vaihingen. It belongs to the TU9 group of German technical universities, with engineering as its structural core.

Faculties span architecture and urban planning, civil and environmental engineering, chemistry, energy and process engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering and geodesy, engineering design, mathematics and physics, and the humanities. Graduate work concentrates on automotive and mechanical engineering, aerospace, simulation science through the SimTech cluster, and architecture. University chairs collaborate with Fraunhofer institutes in the region.

About 22,000 students enroll, with a high share of international students in English-taught master's programs drawn from many countries. The professoriate follows the German chair system. Alumni include automotive pioneer Gottlieb Daimler, chemist Gerhard Ertl, who studied here before a Nobel Prize in chemistry, and physicist Horst Störmer.

Study follows bachelor, master, and doctorate cycles, with the Dr.-Ing. common in engineering. Master's programs mix lectures, laboratory work, and a thesis; the doctorate is research under a professor. The year divides into winter and summer semesters. Doctoral researchers are often employed on grants. Vaihingen is a concentrated research campus on the S-Bahn; architecture and some humanities remain in central Stuttgart.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Stuttgart lists 3 graduate programs across 3 subjects: 2 master's programs and 1 doctoral program, with the widest choice in computer science, materials science & engineering and physics. University of Stuttgart holds rank 351 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
