About Aalborg University
Aalborg University is a public university in Aalborg, in northern Jutland, Denmark. Founded in 1974, it later added campuses in Copenhagen and Esbjerg. From the start it organized teaching around problem-based learning in project groups rather than a classical lecture faculty, and that method remains its defining structure.
Faculties cover humanities, social sciences, engineering and science, and medicine. The university is known for engineering, information technology, energy, planning, and problem-based pedagogy. Engineering laboratories on the Aalborg East campus, energy and robotics groups, and the Copenhagen campus at South Harbor are the sites most used by graduate students in technical fields.
About 20,000 students enroll, including a large master's population spread across the Aalborg, Copenhagen, and Esbjerg campuses. International students are a substantial share of English-taught programs and come from more than 80 countries. Academic staff, including PhD fellows, number about 2,000.
Graduate study concentrates on two-year master's degrees (including cand.polyt. and cand.scient. titles) built from project semesters in the problem-based model. Doctoral education is a three-year PhD with an employment contract. The year is two semesters. PhD fellows are salaried employees rather than stipend-only students. Students in Aalborg live in a compact city on the Limfjord; those at the Copenhagen campus study in the capital.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Aalborg University lists 3 graduate programs across 3 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in computer science, environment, climate & sustainability and robotics. Aalborg University holds rank 322 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
