Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

The Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona is a public research university founded in 1968, with its main campus at Bellaterra in Cerdanyola del Valles, about 20 kilometers north of central Barcelona, Spain. It was created as a new autonomous university and grew into a comprehensive campus institution with science, medicine, and social-science faculties. Additional teaching and hospital sites lie in the Barcelona area.

Faculties include sciences, biosciences, medicine, economics and business, law, philosophy and arts, education, communication, translation and interpreting, and engineering. Graduate students work with campus research centers and parks and with teaching hospitals in Catalonia; the ALBA synchrotron is nearby in the same municipality.

Enrollment is about 30,000 to 40,000 students, with several thousand in official master's and doctoral programs. International students, including Erasmus and full-degree students from Europe and Latin America, form a substantial minority. Instruction is in Catalan, Spanish, and, in many graduate programs, English.

Graduate study follows the European Bologna pattern of official master's degrees and PhD programs, with coursework, research groups, and a dissertation over two semesters each year. Doctoral candidates are often paid on university or national research contracts. Daily life is campus-based at Bellaterra, linked by rail to Barcelona.
