Universitat Pompeu Fabra

Universitat Pompeu Fabra is a public university in Barcelona, established by the Catalan government in 1990 and named for the linguist Pompeu Fabra. It was created as a compact research university rather than a full-spectrum nineteenth-century campus, and it occupies three urban sites: Ciutadella for social sciences and humanities, Poblenou in the 22@ district for communication and information, and Mar on the waterfront for health and life sciences.

Academic work is grouped into the humanities, health and life sciences, economics and business, political and social sciences, communication, law, translation, and engineering and information technology. Economics, political science, communication, and biomedicine are the fields most associated with the university. Graduate students use the Barcelona School of Economics, a joint graduate school with other Catalan institutions, and laboratories in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park beside the Mar campus.

Enrollment is about 12,000 to 16,000 students, with a high share of master's students from outside Spain, especially in economics and political science. Faculty and affiliated researchers number about 1,500. The economics community around the university has included Andreu Mas-Colell. Alumni work in Catalan and Spanish public administration, media, and biomedical research.

Graduate study includes research master's, English-taught master's, and doctorates organized through doctoral schools. Economics and political science programs are coursework heavy in the first year and then dissertation based. The academic year follows the European semester calendar. Funding includes Spanish and Catalan government grants, foundation scholarships, and research contracts. Students live across Barcelona, with the Ciutadella and Poblenou campuses inside the city grid.
