About University of Jyväskylä

The University of Jyväskylä is a public university in Jyväskylä, in central Finland. It began in 1863 as the first Finnish-language teacher-training seminary, founded by Uno Cygnaeus, and became a university in 1966. Teacher education remains a structural fact even as the institution grew into a multi-faculty research university.

Six faculties cover humanities and social sciences, information technology, education and psychology, sport and health sciences, mathematics and science, and the Jyväskylä School of Business and Economics. The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences is the only faculty of its kind in Finland. The Finnish Institute for Educational Research and information-technology laboratories support graduate work. Teaching sites occupy Seminaarinmäki, Mattilanniemi, and Ylistönrinne around the city's lakes.

About 14,000 students are enrolled, including international students on English-taught master's programs. Staff number about 2,500. Alumni are concentrated among teachers, civil servants, and sport scientists.

Graduate study follows the Bologna structure: two-year master's degrees and doctorates in faculty doctoral programs, with supervision in research groups. The year runs from late summer to May, with a quiet midsummer break. Doctoral candidates are typically on a salaried post or a grant. Jyväskylä is a mid-size lakeside city; students move between the three campus areas by bicycle and live in student housing or city rentals.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Jyväskylä lists 1 master's program, in mathematics. University of Jyväskylä holds rank 467 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
