About Sorbonne Universite

Sorbonne University is a public research university in Paris, formed in 2018 by merging Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV) and Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI). It combines the humanities of the College de Sorbonne, founded in 1257 by Robert de Sorbon, with the science and medicine of UPMC. It is organized as three faculties on sites in the Latin Quarter, at Jussieu and in teaching hospitals.

The faculties are Arts and Humanities, Science and Engineering, and Medicine. Graduate strengths include mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, French literature and history. Students work in Jussieu laboratories, the Pitie-Salpetriere and other hospitals, coastal marine stations, and the Sorbonne buildings.

Enrollment is about 55,000 students, with a large master's and doctoral share and more than 10,000 international students from many countries. Academic staff number in the thousands. Scientists linked to its predecessor faculties include Marie Curie and Pierre Curie; later alumni include writers and physicians from the Paris faculties.

Graduate study follows the French bachelor-master-doctorate pattern, with taught master's degrees and doctorates based in doctoral schools. A doctorate is supervised by a thesis director, with heavier coursework at master's level. The academic year runs from autumn to early summer. Doctoral contracts and national research funding are the usual support. Students live across Paris and study mainly in the 5th and 13th arrondissements.
