About The Institut Polytechnique de Paris
The Institut Polytechnique de Paris is a public grouping of engineering grandes écoles on the Plateau de Saclay in Palaiseau, southwest of Paris. It was created in 2019 around École Polytechnique, founded in 1794, together with ENSTA Paris, ENSAE Paris, Télécom Paris, and Télécom SudParis. It functions as a federal technical institute rather than a single comprehensive university.
Teaching and research concentrate on engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, economics, and digital technology. Member schools run joint master's degrees and share laboratories with CNRS, Inria, and CEA on the Saclay cluster. Students train in optics, telecommunications, statistics, defense engineering, and quantitative economics through school laboratories and the institute doctoral school.
The five schools enroll about 8,500 students, most of them in master's or doctoral study. International students often make up more than a third of the graduate intake and come from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Affiliated faculty and researchers number in the thousands. Alumni of École Polytechnique include former French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and many industrial scientists and senior civil servants.
Graduate credentials include the diplôme d'ingénieur, English-taught Master of Science and Technology degrees, and a three-year Ph.D. under a supervisor in a research unit. Internships in industry and public laboratories are built into the cycle. Palaiseau is a research-park campus; many students live in school residences or commute from Paris on the RER.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, The Institut Polytechnique de Paris lists 4 graduate programs across 3 subjects: 2 master's programs and 1 doctoral program, with the widest choice in physics and electrical engineering. The Institut Polytechnique de Paris holds rank 105 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
