About Toulouse 1 Capitole University
Toulouse 1 Capitole University is a public university in Toulouse, France, created in 1968 when the University of Toulouse, founded in 1229, was split by discipline. It kept the law, economics, and management faculties and remains a social-science university rather than a full comprehensive campus covering medicine and engineering.
Units include faculties of law, economics, and political science, together with management and information technology. The Toulouse School of Economics and the Toulouse School of Management operate as graduate schools of the university. Jean Tirole, at TSE, received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2014. Research in law and industrial economics is based at the Arsenal and the Manufacture des Tabacs.
Enrollment is about 22,000 students, with a large graduate share in law, economics, and management and a sizable international intake in English-taught master's programs. Faculty number in the hundreds in the social sciences.
Graduate study includes the French master's and doctorate in law and economics and international master's at TSE and TSM. Economics tracks are coursework-heavy before the thesis. The year follows the French two-semester calendar. Students work in the historic center and on the former tobacco-factory campus in a compact downtown setting.
