About Université de Bordeaux

The University of Bordeaux is a public French university in Bordeaux, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. A university has existed in the city since 1441; the present institution was reconstituted in 2014 by merging Université Bordeaux 1, Bordeaux Segalen, and Montesquieu-Bordeaux IV. It is a large multidisciplinary university with major sites in the Talence-Pessac-Gradignan science and law district and at the Carreire health campus.

It is organized into collegiate units covering science and technology, law and political science, economics and management, health, and the humanities. Graduate strengths include neuroscience, public health, chemistry and materials, law, and vine and wine science through the Institute of Vine and Wine Science. The Bordeaux University Hospital and the Neurocampus are the principal settings for clinical and brain-science doctorates.

Enrollment is about 50,000 students, of whom a substantial minority are in master's or doctoral programs. International students number on the order of 7,000 and come from more than 100 countries. Faculty and researcher headcount is in the thousands. Alumni of the Bordeaux faculties include Nobel literature laureate François Mauriac, who studied law and letters in the city, and generations of southwestern French physicians, jurists, and scientists.

Graduate study follows the French licence-master-doctorat cycle: coursework-based master's degrees and doctorates prepared in doctoral schools, often with joint supervision across labs and the hospital. The calendar is the French two-semester year. Doctoral candidates are commonly funded by doctoral contracts and research grants. Students live across a spread-out campus city of stone neighborhoods and tram lines, with vineyards and the Atlantic coast within regional reach.
