Université de recherche Paris-Sciences-et-Lettres (PSL)

Université de recherche Paris-Sciences-et-Lettres (PSL) is a collegiate public university in Paris. It was formed in 2010 from grandes écoles and research houses and later given university status. Constituent members include the École normale supérieure, Université Paris-Dauphine, ESPCI Paris, Mines Paris, the Observatoire de Paris, and other specialist schools on sites across the capital.

The university spans fundamental science, engineering, economics and management, and the humanities. ENS is the center for mathematics, physics, and letters; Dauphine for economics and management; ESPCI and Mines for chemistry, physics, and earth sciences; the Observatoire for astronomy. Shared laboratories with CNRS and Institut Curie sit beside the schools. Master's programs are attached to these houses.

PSL enrolls about 17,000 students, a large share of them in master's programs. International students form a high fraction of graduate enrollment, often around a quarter. Faculty and researchers across the members number several thousand. Alumni and associated scientists include physicist Serge Haroche, economist Esther Duflo, and physicist Pierre-Gilles de Gennes.

Graduate study is built on two-year master's degrees, many taught in English, with laboratory placements in the member schools. Doctoral contracts exist in the same laboratories, but the master's is the common graduate entry. The French academic calendar applies. Students work in Left Bank, Dauphine, and other Paris buildings rather than on one enclosed campus, and live in residences or in the city.
