About Architectural Association School of Architecture
The Architectural Association School of Architecture is an independent school of architecture in London, founded in 1847 by young architects as a member-run alternative to pupillage. It occupies Georgian buildings around Bedford Square in Bloomsbury and maintains Hooke Park, a woodland workshop campus in Dorset. It is a specialist school, not a faculty of a larger university.
Teaching is organized through the unit system in the AA Diploma School and through a Graduate School of taught studios and seminars. Fields of emphasis include experimental design, history and theory, landscape urbanism, and digital and environmental research. The AA Archives and a public lecture series sit at the center of school life.
Enrollment is about 800 students, most of them on the diploma and master's tracks, with international students often more than 80 percent and dozens of countries represented. Tutors are a mix of practitioners and theorists. Alumni include architects Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, and Richard Rogers.
Graduate awards include the AA Diploma, taught master's degrees, and design research degrees. Work is studio- and unit-based rather than lecture-heavy, over an academic year of reviews and juries. Bursaries exist, but many students are self-funded. Bedford Square places students in central London, with Hooke Park used for making and landscape work.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Architectural Association School of Architecture lists 1 master's program, in architecture.
