About Bangor University

Bangor University is a public research university in Bangor, Gwynedd, on the north Wales coast between Snowdonia and the Menai Strait. It opened in 1884 as the University College of North Wales, later sat inside the federal University of Wales, and became an independent university in 2007. Its defining geography is a compact city campus plus science sites at Menai Bridge, tying the institution to the coast, to Welsh-language and Celtic studies, and to marine research.

Academic work is grouped in colleges of arts, humanities and business; environmental sciences and engineering; and human sciences. Fields graduate applicants meet first include ocean sciences at the School of Ocean Sciences, psychology, linguistics, forestry, and environmental management. Research vessels and marine laboratories on Anglesey support that work, and Pontio serves as a campus arts and innovation center.

The university enrolls about 11,000 students, including several thousand in postgraduate taught and research degrees and an international intake from dozens of countries. Staff numbers are in the low thousands. People associated with Bangor include linguist Andrew Radford, politician Glenys Kinnock, and musician Dafydd Iwan.

Graduate study follows the British pattern of taught master's, MRes, and PhD by research with a supervisor in a school. The academic year runs in two main semesters. Doctoral and master's students often hold university or UK research-council studentships, especially in marine and environmental fields. Daily life is that of a small coastal city: a walkable campus, Welsh and English in shops and seminars, and ready access to mountains and the strait.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Bangor University lists 2 graduate programs in computer science and earth & environmental sciences: 1 master's program and 1 doctoral program.
