About Brunel University London
Brunel University London is a public research university on a single campus in Uxbridge, west London. It gained university status in 1966, taking its name from the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and developed from Acton Technical College and the Brunel College of Advanced Technology. Unlike most London universities, it concentrates teaching, laboratories, and student housing on one site of about 100 acres. In 2014 it adopted the Brunel University London name to signal its place in the capital while keeping a technical-institute character.
Academic work sits in three colleges: Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences; Business, Arts and Social Sciences; and Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. The university is known for engineering, product and industrial design, sport and exercise science, and applied health. Graduate researchers use the Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology, the Experimental Techniques Centre, and on-campus clinics and sports laboratories.
Enrollment is about 16,000 students, including several thousand postgraduates, and more than a quarter come from outside the United Kingdom, from over 100 countries. Academic staff number about 1,000. Alumni include the comedian Jo Brand and the politician John McDonnell.
Graduate study centers on taught master's degrees, above all MSc programs in engineering, design, business, and health, plus MRes, PhD, and professional doctorate routes with a named supervisor and a thesis. The academic year runs in two semesters. Research students are typically supported by UKRI and university studentships and by industry-funded projects. Student life is campus-based in Uxbridge, with Metropolitan and Piccadilly line trains into central London.
