About Cardiff University

Cardiff University is a public research university in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, founded in 1883 as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire. It was a constituent of the University of Wales until it became an independent university in 2005. It is a civic campus university in the civic center, not a collegiate foundation.

Three colleges group arts, humanities and social sciences; biomedical and life sciences; and physical sciences and engineering. Named units include Cardiff Business School, the Welsh School of Architecture, the School of Medicine, and the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre. Clinical training is linked to the University Hospital of Wales and other NHS boards in southeast Wales.

About 33,000 students study at Cardiff, including a large international postgraduate taught cohort from more than 100 countries. Sir Martin Evans, who shared a Nobel Prize for embryonic stem-cell research, did that work as a Cardiff professor. Alumni include politician Neil Kinnock, composer Karl Jenkins, and journalist Huw Edwards.

Graduate awards include MA, MSc, MBA, MPhil, PhD and medical and dental professional degrees. Research students have a supervisory team; taught master's programs last one year. The academic year is semester-based. Doctoral training partnerships and university studentships fund many PhD students. Campus life sits in the civic center, a short walk from the city center and Cardiff Bay.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Cardiff University lists 254 graduate programs across 43 subjects: 207 master's programs and 41 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in biology, law and health & medical sciences. Cardiff University holds rank 217 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
