About City, University of London
City, University of London is a public university based at Northampton Square in Clerkenwell, London. It began in 1894 as the Northampton Institute, gained university status as City University in 1966 and became a member institution of the University of London in 2016. In 2024 it combined with St George's, University of London. Its defining character is professional education in business, law, health, journalism, engineering and the social sciences in the City of London's orbit.
Academic work is organized in Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), the City Law School, and schools of science and technology, health and psychological sciences, communication and creativity, and policy and global affairs. Bayes is known for finance, actuarial science and management; the Law School for vocational legal training; other strengths include journalism, optometry, midwifery and civil engineering. Research and teaching sites also include the Inns of Court area for law.
Enrollment is about 20,000 students, including a large taught-master's population. International students form around a third of the student body and come from more than 150 countries. Alumni include easyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou and graduates across journalism, the Bar, nursing and the City of London's financial firms. Faculty numbers are in the low thousands when professional tutors in law and health are included.
Graduate study is dominated by one-year taught master's degrees, the MBA at Bayes, the LLM and vocational law courses, and a smaller PhD community. Supervision for research degrees sits in departments; taught programs are coursework and project based on the standard UK autumn-to-summer calendar. Scholarships exist at school level, especially at Bayes. Students live across inner London, with the campus a short ride from the Square Mile and the Inns of Court.
