About Cranfield University

Cranfield University is a British postgraduate institution founded in 1946 as the College of Aeronautics at Cranfield in Bedfordshire. It later became Cranfield Institute of Technology and gained university title in 1993. Its defence teaching sits at Shrivenham, on the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, a few miles from Swindon, while aerospace and manufacturing remain at the original Cranfield airfield campus. Almost all students are postgraduates, which is the university's defining structural fact.

Schools cover aerospace, transport and manufacturing; water, energy and environment; management; and defence and security at Shrivenham. Graduate applicants meet named units such as the School of Management, accident-investigation and aerospace test facilities at Cranfield, and military and security programs at the Defence Academy. Research is applied and industry-linked, including aircraft, agrifood, and energy systems.

Enrollment is about 5,000 students, nearly all on master's or doctoral programs, with more than 40 percent international and many in employer-sponsored cohorts. Academic and research staff number about 1,500. Alumni are concentrated among aerospace and defence engineers and managers trained at Cranfield and Shrivenham.

Degrees include taught MSc courses, research master's and doctorates, and an MBA at the School of Management, often with a thesis or company group project. Teaching mixes residential modules, laboratory work, and distance elements for defence students. The calendar is modular rather than a long undergraduate term. Many students are funded by employers, UK research councils, or defence sponsors. Student life is split between a rural airfield campus at Cranfield and the Shrivenham site near Swindon.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Cranfield University lists 2 graduate programs in marketing, all of them master's programs.
