Health Data Research

Health Data Research UK is the United Kingdom's national institute for health data science, established in 2018 and headquartered in London. It is a distributed research institute rather than a campus university, formed as an alliance of universities, NHS organizations, charities, and industry to use health data for research.

Work runs through national research sites, data hubs, and training programs in health data science, epidemiology, and biomedical informatics. Doctoral researchers sit in partner universities while using HDR UK networks, trusted research environments, and NHS-linked datasets.

The institute is small relative to a university: hundreds of affiliated researchers across the UK rather than a single enrolled student body. Collaboration is international by design. It has no conventional public alumni roster of household names.

Graduate study is doctoral, through PhD studentships and programs such as the HDR UK-Turing Wellcome Programme in Health Data Science, with supervision shared between universities and the institute. Students are based in London or at partner sites and work with national health-data infrastructure rather than a single campus.
