About Heriot-Watt University

Heriot-Watt University is a public university based at Riccarton on the western edge of Edinburgh. It traces to the School of Arts of Edinburgh, founded in 1821 as Britain's first mechanics' institute, takes the names of philanthropist George Heriot and engineer James Watt, and received university status in 1966. It is a technical university with further campuses in the Scottish Borders, Orkney, Dubai, and Malaysia.

Academic work is grouped around engineering and physical sciences, energy, geoscience, the built environment, computer science, mathematics including actuarial science, business, and textiles and design at the Borders campus in Galashiels. Graduate students use facilities such as the Lyell Centre, run with the British Geological Survey, and Edinburgh Business School, alongside petroleum and energy laboratories on the Edinburgh campus.

Across its campuses the university enrolls on the order of 27,000 students, with a high international share and students from more than 150 countries. Edinburgh remains the largest site. Faculty are concentrated in engineering, energy, and business. Alumni work mainly in energy, engineering, construction, and finance.

Taught master's degrees, including one-year MSc programs, and research degrees (MPhil and PhD) follow the usual British mix of coursework and supervision. The academic year is organized in semesters. Scholarships include university awards and industry-linked studentships in energy and engineering. Graduate life in Edinburgh is split between the self-contained Riccarton campus and the city, about seven miles to the east.
