About London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a specialist postgraduate school of the University of London, founded in 1899 after the work of Sir Patrick Manson in tropical medicine. It occupies a Bloomsbury site in central London and remains a faculty of public health, epidemiology, and tropical medicine rather than a general university.

Academic organization is three faculties: Epidemiology and Population Health, Infectious and Tropical Diseases, and Public Health and Policy. Taught master’s degrees and research degrees (PhD, DrPH, MPhil) cover epidemiology, medical statistics, infectious disease, global health, and health services. The school maintains research units in The Gambia and Uganda and a large distance-learning program through the University of London.

Enrollment is on the order of 4,000 students, overwhelmingly postgraduate, with a high international share from more than 100 countries. Faculty include clinicians, epidemiologists, and laboratory scientists. Alumni occupy posts in ministries of health, the World Health Organization, and nongovernmental organizations.

Degrees are taught MSc programs, typically one year full-time in London or longer by distance, and research doctorates by supervision. Funding includes research-council studentships and sponsored places from health ministries. The calendar follows the UK academic year, with intensive teaching blocks. Students work in Bloomsbury, using the Keppel Street building and surrounding University of London libraries.
