About MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences

The MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences is a Medical Research Council institute on the Hammersmith Hospital campus in West London. It developed from the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre, created in the 1990s on the same site, and operates as a specialist biomedical research institute rather than a multi-faculty university. It shares the Hammersmith campus with Imperial College London's Faculty of Medicine.

Research groups work in epigenetics and genomics, quantitative cell and developmental biology, metabolism, and physiology, with core facilities for imaging, sequencing, and computation. Graduate students use those laboratories and the adjacent hospital research environment. Doctoral registration is typically through Imperial College London, which awards the degree.

The institute employs a few hundred scientific and support staff, including group leaders, postdoctoral scientists, and doctoral researchers from the United Kingdom and abroad. There is no undergraduate college. Alumni of the student and postdoctoral programs enter academic biomedical research, the MRC and NHS research system, and biotechnology.

The pathway is a research doctorate, sometimes preceded by a research master's, with laboratory supervision, journal clubs, and Imperial graduate-school requirements. Studentships often come from the MRC, Imperial, and related biomedical funders. Daily life is that of a hospital research campus in Hammersmith, with London housing and transport.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences lists 1 master's program, in biology.
